Creating an Unusual and Functional Interior Design

When it comes to designing her new home, the homeowner had a clear vision - she wanted something unusual and out of the ordinary. Rather than a typical open plan layout, she desired to bring an architectural sense into the interiors. This is where Chi Ming Danny Chiu stepped in to create a unique and functional living space.

Utilizing the soaring ceiling of the 400 square feet flat, Chiu designed a custom-built cylindrical stacked volume that became the centerpiece of The Morgan. This unusual curvy stacked volume consists of five layers, each fulfilling a different function. From the inner to the outer, the smallest to the largest, these five overlapping circles create a 360 degree living circle concept.

One of the highlights of The Morgan is the custom-built cylindrical fixture that separates the living area and the sleeping quarter. This cylindrical volume not only adds visual interest but also provides privacy and functionality. The color palette remains soft and concise, complementing the grey tone of the cylindrical stacked volume highlighted by metallic accents.

Chiu's design also takes into account the homeowner's need for functional pieces. A practical working desk, a large bookshelf, and adequate storage solutions were incorporated seamlessly into the design. The result is a space that is not only visually stunning but also highly functional.

For the open plan living area, kitchen, study, and sleeping quarter, Chiu carefully considered the flow and interaction between these spaces. A luxurious walk-in closet was thoughtfully curated next to the entrance foyer, and a sleek and fully equipped L-shaped open kitchen was reconstructed near the window. The bathroom remained in its original position, ensuring convenience and functionality.

The Morgan project started in October 2017 and was completed in September 2018 in the mid-levels of Hong Kong. It is a testament to Chiu's ability to transform a small space into a unique and functional living environment.

The Morgan has received recognition for its outstanding design. It was awarded the Bronze A' Design Award in the Interior Space, Retail, and Exhibition Design category in 2020. This prestigious award celebrates designs that exhibit strong technical and creative skills, contributing to quality of life improvements.
